Listening to the Land: Life in the North Carolina Mountains

Henry David Thoreau once said, “In wilderness is the preservation of the world.” There is no greater example of this than the North Carolina Mountains. Western North Carolina (WNC) offers residents some of the most diverse climates, trees and wildlife in the world. It’s a place full of breathtaking, magical, natural phenomenon including forests, mountaintop vistas, waterfalls and riverbanks. It’s a beautiful place for a wedding, and if you do plan on getting married here check out this intimate wedding photographer Asheville.

Over the years, individuals, local communities, state officials and the federal government have worked to preserve the beautiful landscape in Western North Carolina, along with the animals and plants that live there. This effort continues today and each year. And, as new people relocate to the area in search of a better quality of life, they discover an age-old mountain tradition…listening to the land.
The Mountains in North Carolina Tell Their Story: Appalachian Mountain Facts
The Appalachian Mountains are a record of Earth’s history. According to the U.S. Geological Survey:

“The Appalachians are old. A look at rocks exposed in today’s Appalachian Mountains reveals elongated belts of folded and thrust faulted marine sedimentary rocks, volcanic rocks and slivers of ancient ocean floor. Strong evidence that these rocks were deformed during plate collision. The birth of the Appalachian ranges, some 480 million years ago, marks the first of several mountain building plate collisions that culminated in the construction of the supercontinent Pangea with the Appalachians near the center.”

The beginning of the Appalachian Mountains led to hundreds of millions of years of Earth changes. Finally, approximately 60 million years ago, the Appalachians we know today began to take shape.

The exact boundaries of the Appalachian Mountains are debatable, […]

Whisper Mountain is Home to Southern Living’s 2009 Mountain Sweepstakes Home

ASHEVILLE, NC – June 1, 2009 – Whisper Mountain, home to the 2008 Southern Living Green Idea House, has once again teamed up with Southern Living Magazine to offer yet another environmentally-inspired home – Whisper Creek Cabin. This cabin is one of four homes, and the only mountain home, that can be won during the Southern Living’s Choose Your Home Giveaway sweepstakes this spring. The public can register to win the home through June 30.

The home opened for tours on May 14 and will continue through June 30. A $5 donation to tour the home will go to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy – its mission is to conserve the natural beauty and habitat of western North Carolina and east Tennessee. One way this is achieved is through developing and maintaining long-term conservation relationships with private landowners such as Whisper Mountain.

The Whisper Creek Cabin was constructed by Haven Custom Homes, and Jade Mountain Builders of Asheville, and is built with many eco-friendly and environmental principles in mind, including the use of site-harvested poplar siding and recycled tin roofing for the front porch from a local barn.

With a rustic exterior design of shingle and stone, the cabin’s design mimics the style and charm of 19th-century homes that were once prevalent in the mountains of Western North Carolina. This 1,550 square foot cabin has two bedrooms and sits alongside Whisper Creek, one of the many protected mountain streams at Whisper Mountain. Sweeping views can be enjoyed from the front porch encompassing the great French Broad River Valley and surrounding parkland.

“We chose Haven Custom Homes for this project because their fabrication process is consistent with Whisper Mountain’s dedication to eco-friendly construction techniques,” Charlie Ball, developer, Whisper Mountain says.

Southern Living Idea House

Green Features
The 2008 North Carolina Southern Living Idea House has an impressive list of green credentials. It has two green certifications: NC HealthyBuilt Homes, and LEED for homes (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Energy efficiency is quantified with Energy Star certification.

Green building features include four major areas: sustainable site management, sustainable resource management, energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality.

The resulting home will have half of the energy cost compared to a home built to the International Energy Code. It will have stellar indoor air quality that will promote better overall health for the homeowners. The design of the home will also impact the inhabitants psychology. Living in well designed environs affects mood, and in turn, health. The house will be more comfortable, durable and easier to maintain. If you’re thinking about making a move from the North to the South, you may want to look into a list of the best moving companies in the USA.

People that live and love green homes find it easy to digest lower energy bills and healthier indoor environments. Brian and Jennifer Cory, who bought a green home, have two children who suffered with severe, chronic asthma. The Cory kids are now asthma-free, with no doctor visits and no inhalers. And the family’s monthly energy bills have dropped from $500 in their New Jersey home to $110 total here. Green homes are fantastic investments to buy in the US, but as of yet they haven’t taken off in other countries around the globe like England and Australia. However, if you are looking to buy a home in Australia for example and you’re not quite ready for a green home, you can use a realtor like Rise Property Management […]
